This is one of the 12 Buddhist caves (dating from AD 600 to 800). Out of 12, one is called as 'chaitya' i.e., place for prayer and the rest are 'viharas' i.e., living accommodation.
Some of these caves consist of three levels, as can be seen in this picture.
