Daulatabad Fort

Daulatabad Fort is situated 15 km from Aurangabad. It is located on a conical hill about 200 mts high. It was created by Yadava rulers (850-1334) and called Deogiri. They created vertical sides around the fort to improve its defenses. It gained notoriety as a short time capital of India. In 1327 Muhammad Bin Tughlaq got a crazy idea to march the whole population of Delhi to this site with disastrous results! He changed its name to Dalutabad, a place of prosperity. Thousands died on the long march to the new site.
The crazy plan was short lived due to revolt from local Muslim Governors, in the absence of Tughlaq, who had to visit north frequently. It changed many hands including Zafar Khan of Gulbarga and Ahmad Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar. Finally it was captured by Akbar in 1595. It remained with the Mughals till 1633. After the death of Aurangzeb it fell in the hands of Nizam of Hyderabd.
